Guaranteed Minimum Income works. Unfortunately, the 2024 National Democratic and Republican Party Platforms do not mention guaranteed income or any other kind of direct cash transfers, despite widespread voter support:

When looking more closely at 2024 Democratic and Republican platforms at the state level, we only found four states with any mention of direct cash transfer:
- Democratic Party of Iowa — “We support ... Universal Basic Income.”
- Democratic Party of Michigan — “We support a $2,000 per month
‘universal basic income’ for all people in the U.S., at least for the duration of the pandemic.” - Democratic Party of Washington — “Every person in the US should receive enough income to support life, therefore, we believe in a guaranteed basic income.”
- Democratic Party of California included the idea in their platform until 2024 — “Support the pursuit of the American Dream and economic security through programs such as government guaranteed jobs programs and universal basic income,” but dropped it in 2026.
None of the Republican state parties endorse cash transfers. Five Republican-controlled legislatures in South Dakota, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa and Idaho have passed laws blocking GMI programs.
Why aren't more politicians talking about GMI?
Because voters are not asking their representatives “if GMI works, why aren't we doing it?” Let’s start that conversation.
